Overview and Responsibilities

The Assistant Director of the First Generation Initiative (FGI) assists the Director in providing oversight and direction for FGI. As an integral part of the FGI leadership team, the assistant Director is responsible for programmatic elements of both FGI and Countdown to College (C2C). As a member of the Student Success Center (SSC), the ideal candidate for this position is collaborative, inclusive, and deeply passionate about mission-based institutions. 

 

FGI was established in 2010 with the aim of ensuring academic success for first-generation college students, those who are the first in their family to attend a postsecondary institution. This mission-driven initiative extends beyond merely facilitating access to college to include an emphasis on retention of first-generation students in their effort to complete their college degree. 

 

The program caters to students at two key stages in their educational journey: high school and college. High school students from partner schools can participate in the Countdown to College (C2C), an annual summer program designed to enhance academic skills essential for college readiness. Additionally, the FGI scholarship provides full tuition funding for selected first-generation students who enroll at SMUMN, providing access to comprehensive academic, social, and cultural support.

 

Job Responsibilities: 

    1. Assist the Director with providing holistic support for FGI; 
    2. Supervise the Student Success Specialist for FGI;
    3. Lead the C2C planning team;
    4. Manage the review process for college applications, scholarships, and other opportunities:
      1. Collaborate with stakeholders to establish selection criteria;
      2. Evaluate candidates;
      3. Facilitate decision-making meetings , and 
      4. Communicate outcomes to all applicants.
    5. Lead recruitment efforts for C2C and FGI:
      1. Develop strategies to attract prospective students to SMUMN;
      2. Organize recruitment events, campus tours, and information sessions;
      3. Build & maintain relationships with schools, community organizations, and prospective students to promote FGI.
    6. Cultivate and maintain relationships with FGI alumni to foster ongoing engagement and support:
      1. Coordinate alumni events, reunions, and networking opportunities;
      2. Collect and share alumni success stories for current students;
      3. Develop and maintain networking opportunities between alums and current students. 
    7. Coordinate logistics, budgeting, and promotion for FGI-sponsored events and activities.
    8. Develop and implement a structured study program to support student academic success.
      1. Provide resources, guidance, and accountability for FGI students;
      2. Monitor progress and adjust interventions as needed to meet student needs.
    9. Design and administer a peer mentorship program to facilitate support and guidance for FGI students:
      1. Recruit, train, and supervise peer mentors;
      2. Evaluate program effectiveness and implement improvements as necessary.
    10. Manage resources for FGI students, including the Clothing Closet, Snack Shelf, and School Supplies Cabinet:
      1. Manage inventory and distribution of resources to ensure availability for students in need;
      2. Coordinate donation drives and solicit community support for resource maintenance;
      3. Establish protocols for access and replenishment of resources.
    11. Plan and execute events tailored to senior FGI scholars.
    12. Other duties as assigned.

 

 

Qualifications

 Essential Skills and Functions:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Empathetic and helpful characteristics are necessary

Experience and Education Requirements: 

  • Master’s degree preferred - Counseling, Higher Education, Education, or related field
  • 1-3 years experience serving similar populations of first generation students or college aged students
  • Spanish speaking preferred
