Overview and Responsibilities

Saint Mary's University of Minnesota is seeking a Faculty member in Biology who is eager to contribute to its Lasallian Catholic mission of awakening, nurturing, and empowering learners to ethical lives of service and leadership. This full-time term faculty position in the department of Biology will start in August of 2024 on our Winona campus. This individual will be expected to contribute to the teaching mission of the university by teaching undergraduate courses and labs for Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and have a broad Biology background to be capable of teaching courses in our General Biology series." Additionally, the individual will contribute to student advising, service on departmental committees; and engage in research appropriate for undergraduates. At Saint Mary’s the standard teaching load is 22-24 credit hours per contract year, and this individual will be expected to teach this load covering foundational and upper-level areas of undergraduate biology lecture and lab courses, as well as appropriate courses in the Saint Mary's University general education program.

Essential Skills and Abilities

Applicants with a Ph.D. or terminal degree in a Biochemistry or Molecular Biology related program earned by August 19, 2024 are strongly preferred. Experience or evidence of potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate biology is required. Preference will be given to applicants who are able to teach Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for both the Biology and Biochemistry majors and have a broad Biology background to be capable of teaching courses in our General Biology series.

The candidate will be expected to actively mentor students in research that culminates in a student thesis. The Biology Department at Saint Mary's is seeking a colleague who is interested in collaboration and will provide students a hands-on learning environment that empowers students to chart their own path to a career. All majors in the biology department conduct their own, authentic, ethical, independent research projects. Our faculty are experts in both biological research and undergraduate instruction so students receive high-quality teaching, direct interaction with instructors and quality research mentorship.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following credentials and experience:

  • A doctoral degree (preferred) or terminal degree in a Biochemistry or Molecular Biology  related discipline.
  • Experience or evidence of potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate biology.
  • Active engagement in research amenable toward mentoring undergraduates and potential for leading to extramural funding and co-publication with students.
